Where did Kanban come from? Simply, an industrial engineer at Toyota created the system to improve manufacturing efficiency. Taiichi Ohno could be considered the 20th century’s greatest hero of efficiency.

With efficiency, you have lower rates of waste, increased productivity, and improved overall workflow. Sounds great, right? That’s because it is. Efficiency can be difficult as you scale, both in production and in team size, but Kanban scales with you, making it one of the most highly-regarded visual workflow management systems. Moreover, Kanban doesn’t require hours of training or practice in order to get it right. The Kanban concept has been cleverly implemented in the highly configurable and friendly software application Trello; it’s what we use to facilitate icube™.

So, what is Kanban? It’s used much like a scheduling system that tells you what to produce, when to produce it, and how much to produce. In an office setting, Kanban can often be seen using in a three-bin system, where you have “To-Do,” “Doing,” and “Done.” This system certainly works for tactical tasks, but it misses what you need to tackle the complexities in a dynamic business environment, like your Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) and issues. That’s where we took this concept to the next level. In icube™, we provide you with Trello boards specifically designed to operationalize running highly effective tactical and strategic meetings. In addition to that, all the workshops and sessions are already set up in order to implement the system as easily and efficiently as possible.

Trello is an online platform set up based on the Kanban system. Using columns, cards, and bright colors you can see what needs doing and by whom, and with very little effort on your part. It’s like a wall of sticky notes that tells you everything that’s happening on a project or within your company, but without the clutter and wasted paper. Using icube™ and Trello, you can easily prioritize and execute your Tactical and Strategic initiatives; your scorecard, To-Dos, Issues, WIGs and more are all there right in front of you. No more searching through a spreadsheet to find what you’re looking for. And, no more trying to find the owner of a particular goal or issue because they’re all tagged on the cards.

This is a quick rundown of what Kanban and Trello are and how they’re used alongside icube™. If you’re wondering how these two break down further, we recommend our book Venture Perfect. Within you’ll find a setup plan for Trello, including a link to board templates, and how easy and efficient your Tactical and Strategic meetings can be with one simple tool that you can implement on your own.

Venture Perfect describes icube™, a business leadership system designed to maximize teamwork and profit in any company. icube™ teaches leaders how to create powerful systems and structures that foster an inspiring culture, an intelligent strategy, and intense execution for long-term sustainability.
